Breast Oncoplastic Surgery
In 2002, the Department of Health supported an innovative training program to expand training in breast reconstruction in the United Kingdom. This initiative has been driven by the need to increase patient access to both primary breast reconstruction and oncoplastic breast techniques.
The Fellowship program is overseen by the Association of Breast Surgeons and the British Association of Plastic Surgeons through the Training Interface Group in Breast Oncoplastic Surgery. The aim of these training posts is to produce surgeons fit to practice in modern oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery. Applicants from general surgery and plastic surgery are encouraged to participate.
Nine specialist breast units provide high volume interspecialty experience to meet the trainees individual educational needs. Access to breast and plastic clinical experience for each of the posts is highlighted in the job descriptions. Exposure to surgical techniques is comprehensive in all posts, but may vary in volume of cases between units.
An annual recruitment round runs each spring with start dates commencing on 1st October 2010. The current recruitment round is for the ninth year of Fellows.
