Interface Training

This page gives you information about three interface groups:

Head and Neck Surgical Oncology

Although head and neck surgical oncology is not a specialty which leads towards the award of a CCT or CSD, the SACs in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Otolaryngology and Plastic Surgery, through the JCST Interface Group, jointly recognise several national advanced head and neck surgery posts for training. These fellowships are open to trainees in the three specialties who are in either Calman (SpR) years 5-6, or in run-through training at ST7-ST8. Recruitment to these posts is managed nationally by the London Deanery. Applicants will need to provide structured references from their current Programme Director and consultant supervisor. Before entering a fellowship, trainees should gain the support of their parent SAC. In order for the time to be counted towards the award of CCT or CSD, trainees will again need to contact their SAC, having completed trainee assessment forms and training post assessment forms for the relevant period.

Cleft lip and Palate Surgery

Although cleft surgery is not a specialty which leads towards the CCT, the SACs in oral and maxillofacial surgery, otolaryngology and plastic surgery, through the JCST's Interface Group, have jointly recognised several national advanced training posts in cleft surgery, open to trainees of these three specialties and Paediatric Surgery for the last two years of their training. The establishment of these training posts is linked to the reconfiguration of the service for cleft surgery in England and Wales, a process that is now nearing completion. Details of the proposed arrangements are in 'An Outline of Interface training in Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery' (below) and the current situation is discussed in the newsletters.

Hand Surgery

Although hand surgery is not a specialty which leads towards the CCT, the SACs in trauma and orthopaedic surgery and plastic surgery have, through the JCST's interface group, jointly recognised several national advanced hand surgery posts which are open to both trauma and orthopaedic surgery and plastic surgery Type 1 trainees in years 5-6 or run-through trainees in ST7-ST8. Trainees who are successful in obtaining one of these posts will take their training number with them whilst undertaking this period of training. The posts provide exposure to both the plastic and orthopaedic aspects of hand surgery and may be taken for 6 or 12 months. The posts will be advertised by the host postgraduate dean and formal interviews are held. Intending applicants must discuss these posts with their programme director before applying.

All specialist registrars must inform the Interface Group that they intend to undertake an advanced hand surgery post.

As the end of the secondment, trainees must complete a trainee assessment form, training post assessment form and trainee report on the interface post and this post must receive retrospective approval from the interface liaison member in order for it to be counted towards their CCT.
