Upon receipt of all the paperwork required by the JCST, the Specialty Team will initiate the CCT process. The approximate scheduling of which should run as follows:
| Stage of Application |
Length of time to process |
| The CCT application is submitted to the relevant SAC for formal approval. |
Between 2-4 weeks |
| Upon receipt of approval from the SAC, the Specialty Manager writes to the trainee confirming they will be recommended for the award of a CCT. | Up to 1 week |
| Simultaneously, the JCST recommends to the PMETB that the trainee be awarded CCT. | Up to 1 week |
| Upon our recommendation and if the PMETB are in receipt of a completed application form and a cheque for the administration fee, they will make a decision whether to award a CCT. | Between 4-6 weeks You may wish to clarify this with the PMETB |
| Following approval of an application, the PMETB will forward to the trainee: | - |
| You should forward the completed application form to the GMC for entry to the Specialist Register. | - |
| Upon receipt of your application form, the General Medical Council will enter your name in the Specialist Register and confirm by letter that this has been done. |
5 working days |
It can be seen from the above table that even submitting your documents one month before your CCT date does not guarantee that your name will be on the Specialist Register by your CCT date. You are therefore advised to submit the required documents as soon as possible after you receive this pack.
Please Note
Since 1 January 1997 only those doctors whose names are included in the Specialist Register are eligible to take up a substantive consultant post in the NHS.Advanced (sub-specialty) training is an integral part of the CCT programme and is not separately recognised by the PMETB.
