Switching to the New Curriculum

Trainees on a Type 1 SpR training programme have the option of formally switching to the new ISCP curriculum. The Gold Guide notes that prior to discussion of a possible switch with their Training Programme Director, trainees must seek advice from the SAC, as issues relating to assessment and other curricula requirements will vary between specialties.

The switch would be from a time-based curriculum to a competence-based curriculum; this being the case, the SAC will need to consider an individual’s competencies in order to place him or her at the appropriate level of the new curriculum. If any competencies were gained in previous training that did not have the requisite approval, the trainee will be awarded a CESR (CP) upon completion of training.

Any trainees wishing to switch over should submit the following to the SAC:

  • Consolidated and validated logbooks from all previous training;
  • Completed assessment forms and RITAs from all previous training;
  • Updated CV.

Although the SACs can assist with placing trainees at the appropriate level within the new curriculum, the decision as to whether a trainee will switch over is ultimately a local one.

If it is agreed that the trainee should switch to the new curriculum, and the SAC has indicated the appropriate level, the Gold Guide stipulates that the trainee should write formally to the Postgraduate Dean. The trainee’s NTN will need to be modified to the suffix “S”, indicating that the trainee is a former SpR. The Postgraduate Dean will write to the trainee with their modified NTN, and must inform the JCST of the change.

All decisions to switch to the new curriculum must be made by 31 December 2008 at the latest.
