Recognition of Previous Training

The Gold Guide specifies that trainees recruited to ST3 may have previous training* recognised in order to advance to a higher training level. If previous training took place in GMC-approved posts (i.e. SHO, SpR or LAT training), the individual is still on track to receive a CCT upon completion of training. However, if the previous training was not in GMC-approved posts (i.e. overseas clinical training or UK unapproved training), the trainee will receive a CESR at the end of training.

*Please note that you should apply within the early stages of your appointment to have any previous training recognised.

Regional training committees should seek advice from the SAC about how much previous training should be considered, and in which ST-level the trainee should be placed. Consulting the SAC at this stage is recommended and may help avoid any potential conflict when the time comes for the SAC to consider a trainee for the CCT/CESR. Applications for recognition of previous training should include:

  • Consolidated and validated logbooks from the periods being considered;
  • Completed assessment forms or RITAs from the periods being considered or report from overseas supervisor;
  • Curriculum and syllabus from overseas training if applicable;
  • Confirmation of local support for recognition of the training (i.e. letter from the programme director or postgraduate dean);
  • CV if the trainee has not already been enrolled with the SAC/JCST
