CESR (CP)

The Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration - Combined Programme (CESR (CP)) route is in place for trainees who have been appointed above ST1/CT1 level to a Deanery and General Medical Council (GMC) approved training programme, and who at point of entry to the programme have had previous unapproved training counted. Trainees in these circumstances will have a National Training Number ending with the suffix ‘E’.

The certificate does not replace the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). Trainees who are awarded the CESR (CP) will be recommended to the General Medical Council (GMC) for Specialist Registration in the same manner as a trainee on the CCT route. Trainees will thus be able to work as substantive consultants in the UK.

The application process for a CESR (CP) entails four stages which are set out by the GMC here

How do I enrol with the Specialty Advisory Committee (SAC) in my specialty?

Before being enrolled with the SAC in your specialty you need to submit to the SAC a number of documents which should relate to the unapproved posts* which were considered at time of appointment to your training programme.

*All non GMC approved posts will fall under this category, for example overseas SHO; staff grade posts; LAS; etc.

Please note that training undertaken within the European Economic Area (EEA) will be recognised by the GMC, if evidence is submitted showing that posts had the approval of the competent authority in that country. Further information regarding the competent European authorities can be found here. Trainees in these circumstances would not be eligible for a CESR CP.

The documents you need to submit are as follows:

  • Full up to date curriculum vitae (all posts to be listed mm/yy);
  • Validated consolidation sheets;
  • Trainee assessments;
  • Name and address of at least one referee to whom the reference form has been forwarded. All periods of training that you wish to have assessed need to be covered in the reference form;
  • Reference Form - please follow this link to download the reference form and please make sure this form is completed taking into account the guidelines provided under each section;
  • CESR CP Form - please follow this link to download.

Am I on the right route?

If you are not sure if you should be on the CESR (CP) route please follow this link on the GMC website, which should help you assess what route you should be on (you will be asked a number of questions which will lead you to the route for which you are eligible).

Further information on the CESR (CP) is available at www.gmc-uk.org
