MMC Trainee Information
The information in this section is aimed at trainees appointed to ST posts from 1 August 2007 onwards.
Recent changes in postgraduate medical training arose from policy developed by the four UK Health Departments which is set out in Modernising Medical Careers (MMC 2003). This policy describes the training structure and framework intended to support the introduction of explicit standards of postgraduate medical training.
The original intention was for trainees to enter ‘run-through’ specialty training after completing the Foundation Years and this was the case for those appointed in 2007. However, review of MMC since then has resulted in different approaches for different specialties and also different approaches in the four countries of the UK.
Trainees entering the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) approved specialty training programmes on or after 1 August 2007 are known as Specialty Registrars (StRs). Entry to training programmes will only be achievable through competitive entry.
